ABOUT US

Tropical Health Foundation of India is a non profit charitable voluntary organization functioning at Kunnamkulam Municipality of Thrissur District. The Tropical Health Foundation of India was founded by Dr.k. Jacob Roy and late Maj. A.V. Thomas in 1986. Initially it focused on activities relating to "Community Health and Nutrition". Later through the "Family helper Programme" fonded by Lutheran World Relief, a physiotherapist and and an assistant went from house to house to identify the disabled and do necessary intervention.

In 1992 a staff from T.H.F.I was sent with the financial support of Indo-German Social service society for training as Multipurpose Rehabilitation Technician Training in Handicapped International, a French Organization in Pondicherry. In the meantime a camp for the Leprosy Amputees was organized in collaboration with Ankakarunya Kendra , Banglore. Subsequently Handicap International and ADD(UK) came forward to set up a workshop in 1992. Supplying artificial limbs and Orthotic appliances has since then been a major thrust area of our programmes. The workshop made a humble beginning with 64 cases during that year has now crossed 6000 cases in the year 2002. Grant obtained under Assistance to Disabled persons (ADIP) scheme of Ministry Social Justice and Empowerment of India was a stepping stone in achieving self reliance of the poor disabled by supplying assistive devices like limbs, calipers, crutches, wheel chair etc to persons below poverty line. Camps are regularly conducted in different parts of the state to identify the beneficiaries under the scheme. A Special School for the Mentally Challenged was set up in 1990 and got the recognition from the department of public Instruction, Government of kerala in 1999. The Centre for cerebral Palsy was started in 1997 as part of T. H. F. I with the view to help and rehabilitate the increasing number of children affected by Cerebral Palsy. They are coming to T.H.F.I everyday for physiotherapy and special education. Vocational training in tailoring for the Deaf girls and training in Screen-printing for boys was also started later.
